Part two in our series of discussions on psychological issues for Intended Parents.
Choosing a Donor
Once intended parents have made the decision to use an egg donor, anxiety can arise surrounding the donor choice. Â Every intended parent usually approaches the issue with ‘preconceived’ criteria for choosing their ‘perfect’ candidate – beyond the standard medical screening that is done, scholastics, personality, and appearance are usually at the top of their list. Â I empathize with individuals and couples as to how difficult it is to make such a big decision. Â It is important to remember that there is no rush in choosing a donor. Â It takes time to find the right match. Â Whatever the intended parents are looking for, I encourage them to get as much information as possible from their egg donation agency regarding their donor, while also trying not to ‘over-control’ the situation. Â Once one feels they have made the best decision, according to the information they have, then the challenge can be trying letting go. Â There are no guarantees in life, all of us who are parents usually begrudgingly learn that a lot more of life is out of our control than we would like. Â Parenting is about being able to handle all the imperfections that come with a child, whether you have your child through an egg donor or not. Â When couples do have difficulty containing their anxiety during this process therapy can help.
As the ‘screening’ psychotherapist, my process is analytical and involves assessing the donor for her maturity and ability to follow through with the process, as well as the presence of any major psycho-pathology (i.e. personality or mood disorders). Â An interview and psychological test are used to check for either of the two preceding elements.

Check out our freshly updated “Who We Are” page to meet the newest staff members to join the BHEDÂ team. Â Liz Bader-Natal, Bay Area Coordinator, Â provides support to Donors and Intended Parents throughout the duration of the cycle. Â Sally Blackford manages our online server and has lent a tremendous hand in keeping day-to-day administrative work running smoothly. Â And Diana Ashley, a previous donor herself, works in Donor Outreach to keep each of our donor’s profiles accurate and up-to-date.
With the increases that we’ve seen in every area – from donor applicants to interview, to cycles to manage and medical records to request (and fax, and file, and update…), these ladies have jumped in with both feet and done a stellar job helping our program grow with grace.

For our applicants who live outside of the Los Angeles area, we conduct our interviews via webcam, which gives us the exceptional ability to say that we’ve actually met each one of the egg donors on our database! Â I’ve worked with other agencies in the past and I can’t say that the same is true for those organizations. Â This gives us the confirmation that the person on the other end really is who they say they are, and gives us a much better feel for the donor’s personality and character. Â I really enjoy being able to communicate with a donor in this way. Â Some donors who have children of their own will even bring their child(ren) to the camera for a few minutes. Â I also love seeing a donor who takes copious notes during our interview – when I can see her writing, it’s confirmation to me that she wants to make sure she knows what is required of her.
More and more of our applicants now have their own cameras that they are able to use for the interview, and for donors who don’t we will send one out via UPS.  From a logistics standpoint, this system actually runs surprisingly smoothly.  The only challenge I’ve experienced when working with webcams is that some donors who have never used a webcam before might have some trouble setting it up, but that is usually sorted out quickly and we can start the interview.  When the interview is over the donor just sends the camera back to us to be used by another candidate.  The process of sending the camera back is very simple as well – we provide them with a return label so there is no expense to the donor.  It makes it easy for everyone!

I stumbled upon the idea of egg donation a couple of years ago when a friend was looking at job postings on Craigslist.  While neither of us considered the idea too seriously at the time; it stuck with me, not as a money making idea, but as an awesome thing to do for a woman or a family.  I looked at a few donation websites recently and when I found BHED, I knew this was something I wanted to do.  I immediately felt comfortable with their website and staff, and started to get really excited about the possibility of my little eggs creating a life for someone else.
As I grow older, I can feel an inner tugging towards wanting a family.  My mom always used to tell me the story of how she decided to have my older brother and me.  She had lunch with an old friend who had a newborn baby and thought, “It’s time.  I want that.”  When I was young, I thought I never wanted kids and my mom’s story sounded so cliche to me.  I’m not ready to have kids now, but I’m finally beginning to understand how my mom felt.  To have a baby inside you is such a gift.  I want to help make that happen for someone.

We went through egg donor after egg donor with this particular agency, and they kept flaking out on us. If they didn’t change their minds immediately, they would string us along and then quit on us. Or, they would take 2 months to return the contract and say it must have gotten lost in the mail. Just what you need to inspire confidence after you go out on a limb to use an anonymous stranger’s DNA to start a family. And if the egg donors from this agency weren’t being difficult, the agency was. Their follow up was abysmal and their attitudes even worse. It was very discouraging. Then, late one Friday night I noticed a donor of interest posted on the BHED (Beverly Hills Egg Donation) website. She was the first donor that had caught my attention before we were strongly encouraged by our clinic to work with this FL agency. She had been unavailable at the time, some months earlier, and I just happened to notice that she was posted again. So I sent an email and Lisa called me shortly after. This donor had become available almost mid-cycle due to some strange circumstances and it became possible for us to jump right in, so we did.

While that cycle didn’t pan out for us, it brought us to a wonderful clinic in VA and to BHED . We have found BHED’s donors to be educated, responsible, and pretty much all-around wonderful girls. Their staff is supportive and extremely diligent and they go above and beyond to make this experience as smooth as possible. They know a lot about their egg donors and they spend a great deal of time selecting them and teaching them about the process so they are ready, willing and able to see it through to the end, no small feat. For those of you who have not been through a cycle yourselves, it is not for the faint of heart. And to go through it to help an anonymous couple start a family is pretty remarkable.

Now, onto the remarkable part of our story. After a year of trying to cycle with various egg donors and then finally finding BHED, we were matched and the donor was cleared and we were ready start. Well, almost ready to start. The donor had gotten her period and was on the pill waiting for me. I returned from a business trip expecting to start my period early the next week and for some reason, I decided to take a pregnancy test. Not sure why, I don’t normally take them. Well, imagine our shock to find out that a little stick was telling me that I was already pregnant. I think we were in denial at first and since I had gotten pregnant once before and it didn’t take, we knew it was still a long shot. So, we made the decision to go through with the donor cycle as well and to freeze the embryos. It had been such a long, hard journey to get to this point we just couldn’t risk having to start all over again. Our donor did wonderfully, with 19 eggs retrieved, 11 fertilized and ultimately 4 blastocysts frozen for future use. We are very grateful to BHED for their support and really cannot say enough wonderful things about their organization and its dedication. I hope our story provides you with some encouragement to press on when things look bleak and some hope, because despite a diminished ovarian reserve, a blocked fallopian tube and sperm that doesn’t survive 24 hours, anything can happen. I wish you all the best of luck.
